2018-2019 Mentor Bios
Hey y'all! My name is Rachel Powell and I am from Houston, Texas! My major is Hospitality Business and I am getting a minor in Environmental and Sustainability Studies. You can often find me around Bailey making a lit meme, laughing with my pals or furiously studying in the fishbowl. If I'm not in Bailey, I am most likely at one of the many meetings I attend for all of the organizations I am a part of! I am in the Honors College, a study abroad ambassador (I have studied abroad in New Zealand and am going to Antarctica this winter break), Bailey Hall Government and several Hospitality Business organizations. I have mastered the art of balancing a healthy social with school involvement and plenty of sleep and can't wait to share all of my study tips with y'all! I can't wait to meet everyone and to welcome you into RISE! Oh, and I worked at the Houston Zoo for 5 years and spent time training giraffes!
Hi everyone! My name is Maddy and I’m a sophomore here at Michigan State. Although I’ve changed my major a few times, I am now in the College of Education with a major in Kinesiology and a minor in Coaching. After graduation, I hope to go to physician assistant school, either at Grand Valley State University, Duke University, or Nova Southern University in Florida. This past year in RISE, I was involved in the Health and Wellness Team, which put on events such as coloring nights and yoga nights in Bailey Hall. Outside of RISE, I am a part of the Honors College and the Honors College Service Club, which does volunteering across campus. Last summer, I did a Freshman Seminar Abroad and studied environmental sustainability across the world in New Zealand and am hoping to do another study abroad to Australia. Outside of school, I enjoy sports and am an outfielder on the MSU Club Softball Team. I also go to a lot of the basketball, football, baseball, and hockey games. I can’t wait to get to know you guys, and if you think we have something in common, I would love to be your mentor!
Hello, my name is Ally and this year I will be a sophomore in RISE! I am studying Environmental Biology-Zoology in the College of Natural Science (I am also in the Honors College) and I hope to eventually work in the field of restoration ecology. In RISE I volunteer in the Bailey Greenhouse and with the Victory Garden project. I currently work in the Holekamp lab on campus studying hyena aggression and over the years I have had lots of interesting experiences volunteering at an animal sanctuary for dogs, a zoo, a conservation-based nonprofit, Michigan Audubon, and the MSU Museum. I am a passionate but reasonable vegan and would love to help anyone with dietary restrictions figure out how to navigate the cafeteria. If you like talking about random facts I am sure we will get along great and I can’t wait to meet all of you next school year!
Hello, my name is Holly Pummell and I will be a sophomore this fall. I am in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources with a double major in Environmental Economics and Management and Food Industry Management and a minor in Leadership and Integrated Learning. All of these clubs come from my love for the environment and living a very conscious life. I enjoy just about any outdoor activity, college basketball, and being active.
Hey! I’m Annie Dubois. I came into MSU as a Journalism major and switched to Professional Writing, so you can probably guess I really love to write. I’m apart of RISE’s blog team, where we meet every Sunday to review each other’s work and post weekly on our blog. I enjoy writing articles, fiction stories, poetry, and pretty much anything else. I also really like hammocking, kayaking, cuddling with cats, watching my plants grow, and reading. I’m so excited to meet all of you!

Other than being a mentor, I’m involved in the Co-Curricular club Crafternoons and I work at the Wharton Center (theater nerd, I know). In my free time, something surprisingly limited for an art student, I enjoy watching crime shows on Netflix, eating abundant amounts of food, spending way too much money on things I don’t need, and traveling. Even if you don’t choose me as your mentor, I’m always here for advice or anything else!
